R.C. snubbers protect medium-voltage transformers from switching transients — ideal for breaker operations, motor starts, and frequent load changes.

Protect your medium-voltage transformers and power equipment from switching transients with passive RC protection.

R.C. snubbers are passive protective devices built from a resistor and a capacitor working together to calm high-frequency voltage spikes caused by switching events. The capacitor slows the rate of voltage rise at the transformer terminals, while the resistor burns off the transient energy as heat, cutting down on oscillation and electrical noise. They’re a common addition to medium-voltage transformers, industrial equipment with frequent switching, and motor control systems, working alongside surge arresters and grounding rather than replacing them. Henka offers R.C. Snubbers as an authorized Rex Power Magnetics partner.

Protects Transformer Windings

Cuts down high-frequency voltage spikes from switching events before they can stress insulation and shorten transformer life.

Dampens Oscillation
and Noise

The resistor turns transient energy into heat, quieting electrical ringing that can interfere with nearby equipment.

Backs Up Existing Protection

Snubbers catch the high-frequency stress that surge arresters and relays typically miss, adding a layer of protection rather than replacing what's already there.

What is an R.C. snubber?
An R.C. snubber is a protective circuit built from a resistor and capacitor wired in series across transformer or reactor windings. It absorbs and softens the voltage spikes that switching events or circuit interruptions create, slowing the rate of voltage rise and easing the strain on insulation. This also cuts down on electrical noise elsewhere in the system. Used where switching is frequent or loads are pulsed, snubbers help transformers last longer and keep the system running reliably.
As close as possible. If there’s room, a snubber can be mounted directly inside a new transformer’s enclosure to keep the cable run as short as possible. On retrofits or standalone installs, keep the cable between the snubber and the transformer as short as you can. There’s no single maximum cable length that works for every system — a Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV) study is the only way to know how cable length will affect performance in your specific setup.
Every power system is different — load characteristics, equipment ratings, insulation levels, and voltage ranges all vary from one setup to the next. While general design guidelines exist, getting accurate resistor and capacitor values means running a Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV) study specific to your system. Those results are what let us size the components correctly and get the protection right. Contact Henka and we’ll help you work through the process.
R.C. snubbers show up in medium-voltage and industrial systems anywhere switching is frequent or transient currents run high — think capacitor banks, motor control centers, filter circuits, and power-factor correction equipment. They’re also commonly paired with line and load reactors on variable frequency drive (VFD) systems, where they help limit switching transients and extend insulation life.
When a transformer or reactor powers down, the energy stored in its windings can produce a sharp voltage spike at the terminals. The snubber’s resistor absorbs that energy and releases it as heat, while the capacitor keeps the voltage from rising too fast. Together, they stop the kind of voltage overshoot that damages insulation, triggers partial discharge, or wears out components early — and they help quiet electromagnetic interference in nearby equipment too.
Yes. Custom snubber assemblies can be built to match specific equipment ratings and transient energy levels, with options for resistance and capacitance values, voltage ratings, mounting dimensions, and connection methods. Every custom unit is engineered from real system transient data and tested to the same standards as our standard models. Contact Henka with your system parameters and we’ll get the process started.
