What is an R.C. snubber?
An R.C. snubber is a protective circuit built from a resistor and capacitor wired in series across transformer or reactor windings. It absorbs and softens the voltage spikes that switching events or circuit interruptions create, slowing the rate of voltage rise and easing the strain on insulation. This also cuts down on electrical noise elsewhere in the system. Used where switching is frequent or loads are pulsed, snubbers help transformers last longer and keep the system running reliably.
As close as possible. If there’s room, a snubber can be mounted directly inside a new transformer’s enclosure to keep the cable run as short as possible. On retrofits or standalone installs, keep the cable between the snubber and the transformer as short as you can. There’s no single maximum cable length that works for every system — a Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV) study is the only way to know how cable length will affect performance in your specific setup.
Every power system is different — load characteristics, equipment ratings, insulation levels, and voltage ranges all vary from one setup to the next. While general design guidelines exist, getting accurate resistor and capacitor values means running a Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV) study specific to your system. They’re also commonly paired with line and load reactors on variable frequency drive (VFD) systems, where they help limit switching transients and extend insulation life.
When a transformer or reactor powers down, the energy stored in its windings can produce a sharp voltage spike at the terminals. The snubber’s resistor absorbs that energy and releases it as heat, while the capacitor keeps the voltage from rising too fast. Together, they stop the kind of voltage overshoot that damages insulation, triggers partial discharge, or wears out components early — and they help quiet electromagnetic interference in nearby equipment too.
